What is Health?

The word health is an old English word meaning whole. You are healthy when all the parts of your body are properly joined together and communicating with one another. When your body is fully connected, you have high resistance to disease and the energy to adapt to life’s stresses and challenges.

When physically disconnected, a person’s body parts are not correctly attached. A doctor of chiropractic will undoubtedly find spinal misalignments causing nerve pressure and energy/communication blockages in “healthy” people developing diseases. Spinal misalignments are often painless and can cause body/mind dysfunction years before disease symptoms appear.

Health is more than being free of symptoms, it’s being full of life and energy-being fully alive!

What is a subluxation?

A subluxation is a misaligned vertebrae (bone out of place) causing interference to the nerve messages that flow through your body and brain. It will adversely affect the function of your entire body. Subluxations are often painless spinal distortions that affect nerve, muscle, internal organ, disc, bone, and brain function.

What is Chiropractic?

Chiropractic is a natural system of health care concerned with the relationship between the nervous system and the function (health) of the body. Chiropractic improves your body’s ability to function at its optimal level and heal itself by removing the stress of subluxation (spinal misalignment) from your body with specific spinal adjustments.

Is chiropractic safe?

Chiropractic is among the safest of the healing professions. Chiropractic is non-invasive, drugless, and non-surgical. Because of its efficacy and safety, chiropractors pay only a fraction of what medical doctors pay for malpractice insurance.

What causes subluxations?

Stress to the body, from any source (mental, physical, or chemical), can cause a subluxation to occur. Poor posture, accidents, childhood falls, sitting or working in the same position for long periods of time, sports, a stressful birth, and emotional stress are all leading causes of subluxations.

What is a spinal adjustment?

A spinal adjustment is a specific technique used by chiropractors to skillfully apply pressure to an area of the spine or to another joint in the body. The adjustment is frequently performed manually by the doctor.

Are the adjustments as easy to perform as they look?

No. Chiropractors spend hundreds of hours in school practicing the adjustments. Each and every adjustment must be precise. It takes serious concentration and focus on the doctor’s part to correctly perform the adjustments.

What techniques does Dr. Dunn use?

The chiropractic profession has developed nearly 100 different techniques to analyze the spine for misalignments and correct these misalignments. Dr. Dunn uses a combination of techniques to fit individual needs, including Gonstead, Thompson, Cox, and Activator methods. These methods involve light to moderate force. No matter the technique, all chiropractors have the same goal - the elimination or reduction of stress placed on your nervous system by spinal misalignments.

How should I feel after an adjustment?

Most patients feel relief from the problems which led them to seek chiropractic care within a few visits. Many experience relief after the first adjustment. Occasionally, people experience muscle soreness after an adjustment. Dr. Dunn will discuss your case with you and explain to you how to get the best results out of your care and how to minimize any discomfort that may occur. For many, a trip to the chiropractor guarantees a good night’s sleep, higher energy levels, and a sense of relaxation.

Why should I return when the pain stops?

It is easier to stay well than to get well. Lack of symptoms is a poor indicator of health. Most people seek treatment to get rid of pain and some discontinue their care as soon as pain stops. The problem with this type of limited care is that pain usually stops long before the condition which caused the pain in the first place has been corrected. Spinal correction is much like orthodontic braces: It takes time to correct the crooked vertebrae or teeth. Many people could avoid future painful episodes of their back “being out” by just following through with regular check-ups and maintenance care.

What conditions respond to chiropractic treatment?

To name just a few: Back, neck, hip, arm & leg pain. Asthma, headaches, fatigue, TMJ, high blood pressure, PMS, arthritis, sinus trouble, colic, digestive problems, nervous stress, emotional disorders, bed-wetting, ear infection, Carpal Tunnel, ADD, viral infections, and whiplash type injuries, all respond well with chiropractic care.

Can I tell if I have a subluxation without consulting a chiropractor?

A subluxation is like a dental cavity - you may have it for years before symptoms appear. Only a doctor of chiropractic can identify a subluxation of the spine. However, your body communicates with you: Look at your posture, if you do not stand or sit straight you probably are not straight. If you are not feeling well rested or are experiencing stiffness or headaches, you should probably be checked by a chiropractor.

At what age should chiropractic care begin?

It is never too early or too late to begin chiropractic care. Birth can be a traumatic event for the newborn. There are case studies of infants close to death who were adjusted in hospitals with seemingly miraculous results.

Why would I take my child to the chiropractor?

For the same reason you have your child’s teeth cleaned and their vision and hearing screened: To correct any developing problems before permanent damage occurs. Spinal check-ups are important because the spine protects the spinal cord, an extension of the brain. Spinal problems detected and corrected in childhood can prevent many painful conditions that plague the adult population. Children are particularly prone to falls, injuries, and accidents that can damage the spine.

Can I see the chiropractor while I’m pregnant?

Absolutely! Chiropractic is a safe, natural, drug-free choice for the healthcare of pregnant women. Chiropractors receive special training in caring for pregnant women’s spines. Chiropractic care can ease the discomforts of pregnancy by providing a balanced spine, hips and pelvis and by relieving organ pressure due to postural stress.

Can a person who had back surgery see a chiropractor?

Yes. Unfortunately, many people who have back surgery experience a return of their original symptoms months later. The parts of the spine that have not been affected by surgery will still benefit from chiropractic care.

Can I go to a chiropractor if I'm under medical care?

Yes. Today, many doctors of chiropractic and medical doctors are working together to achieve the best level of care for an individual patient. In fact, many medical doctors see a chiropractor themselves.

Are chiropractors real doctors?

Both chiropractors and medical doctors work with diagnosing and treating conditions of the human body. There is a lot of similarity in the education that chiropractors and medical doctors receive - but there are important differences as well. The chart below compares general medical and chiropractic education:
